The French Office for Biodiversity (OFB) renews its call for projects "Atlas of Communal Biodiversity", committing 2 million euros in 2022.
Since 2017, the French Office of Biodiversity has offered each year to municipalities and inter-municipalities to identify the biodiversity issues of their territory by conducting an Atlas of Communal Biodiversity (ABC).
This approach consists in knowing, preserving but also enhancing the natural heritage on a territory. The implementation of this mapping on a local scale not only allows for a better knowledge of the biodiversity of a territory, but also to raise awareness and mobilize elected officials, socio-economic actors and citizens for the preservation of this biodiversity, to then facilitate the consideration of biodiversity issues in local policies. An ABC is therefore an information and decision-making tool for communities in their planning and management processes.
Since 2017, 338 ABC projects involving more than 2,400 municipalities have been created thanks to this system : 338 projets d’ABC impliquant plus de 2 400 communes
