LA CIOTAT : an action study to promote nature in the city to combat heat islands

Many cities in France and abroad have already launched diagnoses of this urban overheating, to determine the importance of the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon on a fine scale. In La Ciotat in particular, a city with a Mediterranean climate where tourism is of major importance, it seems essential to maintain cool areas, particularly in the old centre, for the well-being of inhabitants and summer visitors.

The project "Promoting nature in the city to combat heat islands", led by the Atelier Bleu-CPIE Côte Provençale, proposes to identify and understand the phenomena of urban heat and cold islands, to target the needs for local mitigation of heat peaks, and to promote the continuation of vegetation and nature creation actions in the city of La Ciotat. These actions can notably involve the restoration of green and blue networks and ecological corridors and are intended to be anchored in a local dynamic.

This project, in the form of a study-action, will experiment in a participatory manner with the refreshing power of natural spaces in La Ciotat. It is part of the continuity of the projects carried out over the last 5 years by the Atelier Bleu-CPIE Côte Provençale on these issues. In 2020, the association carried out a cartography of the city's nature and culture spaces, with the gardeners of the shared gardens and the collectives of "vegetalizers".
