A hike for the pros: The natural enclaves of Toulon harbour

The cycle of urban hikes in expert groups continued on 15 May on La Seyne with the theme " The natural enclaves of Toulon harbour". A story of a day rich in exchanges.

The cycle of urban hikes in expert groups continued on 15 May on La Seyne with the theme " The natural enclaves of Toulon harbour". These urban hikes aim to collectively build the story of a territory through the exchange of knowledge and experiences that the Guides Office will feed into future urban hikes for the general public.

But let's get back to our beautiful May 15th day!

The urban excursion started  for the 19 participants in the bay of Toulon from the port to take directly a maritime shuttle towards Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer. Arriving at the Saint-Mandrier-sur-mer landing stage, the NATURE FOR CITY LIFE project and the objectives of this EU GREEN WEEK  labelled day were presented to the "walking experts"! We then made the tour of the harbour by way of the site of the Conservatoire du littoral de la Coudoulière and les Sablettes, and finished in the residential districts of Tamaris (district built by Marcel PACHA) in La Seyne-sur-mer.

The experts went through a remarkable mosaic of urban and natural environments in the heart of the Metropolis of Toulon Provence-Mediterranean dominated in the background by the sea and a hilly and karstic landscape. We were able to exchange on the different types of nature in the city (marine environment, coastline, roadsides, rivers and riparian zones, wetlands, vegetated architecture, parks, neglected areas, urban agriculture, etc.), the uses, functions and connectivity of these spaces in a context of climate change mixed with an urban, historical and heritage approach (architecture).

Actors from various backgrounds participated in this day rich in content! Indeed, representatives of associations (Prud'homie de pêche), urban planning agencies, artists, urban ecologists, community representatives, elected officials, etc. accompanied us on this journey to build the background elements that will soon form the framework of this hike that will be proposed to the general public. It should also be noted that this approach is more broadly part of a metropolitan trail "nature in the city and adaptation to climate change" under construction as planned by the NATURE FOR CITY LIFE project.
